LakeLand High School
In 1928 thanks to the Rosenwald Fund, Lakeland High began serving African Americans from the county’s northern area until 1950. It would be the only high school in Prince George's County until Frederick Douglass High School was established in 1935. Initially, there were six classrooms but over time Lakeland High expanded in size. The communities of Laurel, Murkirk, Lakeland Ammendale, Bladensburg, and North Brentwood petitioned for and vigorously supported the high school.
High school graduates either joined the workforce, enlisted in the military, or pursued further education. Some students received state funding to attend institutions like New York University instead of being admitted to segregated state schools like the University of Maryland, which only began desegregation in 1952. Most college-bound students from Lakeland attended historically black colleges, such as Bowie State, Morgan State, and Howard University.
